Technical English

Students at IES Luis Vives learn how to successfully compose a Curriculum Vitae and a covering letter in English. These tasks are personalised and adapted for the chosen job position, after having analysed a series of offers of employment in the Anglo-Saxon language.Job interviews in the foreign language are also carried out to match a wide variety of situations in the work environment that every English student has to handle. This task helps students prepare for their nearest future and gain confidence in their communicative skills to understand and express themselves orally in a formal register, as in a job interview.

Familiarizing students with typical situations of a work environment is but one of the objectives of the Languages Department: making or answering telephone calls, attending work meetings, going on business trips, preparing meetings, writing reports, reading and answering e-mails, providing customers with an adequate service and handling complains politely and correctly, among many other topics.

Students are faced with a great amount of texts, audios, videos and real situations with the language assistant. The aim is that they can achieve an acceptable level of fluency in the foreign language and that they can acquire a valuable experience similar to the situations they will find in the real world. Specific lexicon from each professional family is dealt with to prepare students to interpret manuals and specific documents and reports with ease. The knowledge of technical vocabulary helps students elaborate their own written compositions and oral discourses to control their oral and written communicative skills.
